The Bus Station Gallery - Not What It Seems

The Bus Station

This is a page of oddball pictures - the ones which don't easily fit a category!

One of the AEC Swifts ordered for South Wales but delivered to London Country - but seen working a contract through Drayton near Abingdon on hire to Oxford South Midland. I didn't know this was coming - I'd stepped outside my house and crossed the road, and - there it was! click for a larger version
A pair of Southdown Plaxton-bodied Leyland Leopards visiting Oxford? Actually they were on hire to Oxford South Midland, and operating the 190 Oxford to London express service on hire. Originally run simply as a relief service for the 290 and 390 services, the 190 grew and grew, and was extremely successful even before Thames Transit began its rival Tube operation. click for a larger version
click for a larger version Another 190 photograph: Oxford South Midland's 991 was one of eight DMS Fleetlines acquired from London Transport, and seen here at Gloucester Green with London as its destination. A little less comfortable than the current coaching fleet......
Another long haul for a city bus. Oxford South Midland 505 lays over on the Saturday 380 service. The opentopper next to it gives a clue - this is Bristol's Weston super Mare garage at the far end of the route. HOR590E is one of the Leyland Atlanteans that originated with King Alfred of Winchester click for a larger version
A green Oxford South Midland Bristol RE saloon? I recall a Bicester garage driver who regularly drove the 132 service to Bedford and had a propensity for retiring his VRT in Bedford then returning to Oxford with a green United Counties RE or National. There was also a former Potteries RE which ran from Bicester for a spell, but 676 was red! 682 was ex Bristol Omnibus, and was noteworthy as being of the flat-windscreen variety. Unlike the hired Swift shown above, this was acquired and ran in green livery with Oxford fleetnames click for a larger version
